Keep Working While You Wait for Permanent Residency (Canada)
Source Immigration is here to help you navigate the path to Canadian permanent residency. One important step for some applicants is the Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP).
What is a Bridging Open Work Permit?
A BOWP allows you to continue working legally in Canada while your application for permanent residence is being processed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This is beneficial if your current work permit is nearing expiry and you don’t want a gap in your employment authorization.
Who is eligible for a BOWP?
You may be eligible for a BOWP if you meet the following criteria:
- You are currently in Canada.
- You have applied for permanent residence under an eligible economic immigration program (we can advise you on this).
- You have a valid work permit, applied to renew an expiring work permit, or are eligible to restore your temporary resident status with work authorization.
Additional Eligibility Considerations:
- Express Entry Applicants: If you applied through Express Entry, you may need to meet additional requirements depending on your specific program (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, or Federal Skilled Trades Class).
- Home Child Care Provider Pilot (HCCPP) or Home Support Worker Pilot (HSWP): If you’re participating in one of these programs, you might be eligible for a BOWP after receiving a positive decision on your permanent residence application (approval in principle) with only 12 months of qualifying work experience (as of April 30, 2023).
Benefits of a Bridging Open Work Permit:
- Maintain employment authorization: Continue working legally in Canada and avoid a gap in your income.
- Open work permit: Unlike some employer-specific work permits, a BOWP allows you to work for any employer and change jobs freely.
- Peace of mind: Focus on your permanent residence application knowing your work status is secure.
