Live and Work in Canada

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is a pathway to permanent residence in Canada for skilled workers with experience in occupations in demand. It’s a great option if you have the skills and qualifications Canada is looking for, but don’t have a job offer or Canadian experience.

Benefits of FSWP

  • Live and work anywhere in Canada: Once you become a permanent resident, you can live, work, and study anywhere in Canada.
  • Pathway to citizenship: Permanent residents are eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship after meeting residency requirements.
  • Build a future in Canada: The FSWP offers a chance to establish yourself in a new country with a high quality of life.

Am I Eligible?

To be eligible for the FSWP, you must meet the minimum requirements in three core areas:

  • Work experience: You need at least one year of continuous, paid work experience in the past 10 years in a skilled occupation listed on the National Occupational Classification (NOC) at skill level 0, 1, 2 or 3.
  • Language ability: You must demonstrate proficiency in English or French by taking an approved language test and achieving a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of at least 7 in all four abilities (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
  • Education: You need to have completed foreign education that is equivalent to a Canadian secondary school diploma (high school graduation).

How to Apply

The FSWP is part of Canada’s Express Entry immigration system. To apply, you will need to:

  1. Create an Express Entry profile: This profile will include information about your work experience, education, language skills, and other factors.
  2. Get your education credential assessed: If your education was obtained outside of Canada, you will need to have it assessed by a designated organization.
  3. Take a language test: Take an approved language test in English or French and meet the minimum CLB score.
  4. Submit your profile: Once you meet the minimum requirements, you can submit your Express Entry profile.
  5. Proof of Funds: You’ll need to show you have enough funds to support yourself and your family upon arrival in Canada.

The Competitive Process

Express Entry uses a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank candidates in the pool. Candidates with the highest scores receive invitations to apply for permanent residence. Having a strong profile with high scores in factors like work experience, language ability, and education will increase your chances of getting invited.
